How to meditate

Meditation: Much More Than Relaxing

When we talk about meditation, many people think it’s simply about sitting down, closing your eyes and trying to clear your mind.

Meditation is much more than relaxing. It can help us calm our emotions, connect with our soul, with the spirits and with the universe, and open ourselves up to our spiritual side.

We live in a world full of noise. We have our phones, notifications, work, responsibilities, problems… and it’s a lot.

Meditation allows us to stop.

You Don’t Have to Clear Your Mind

One of the biggest mistakes we make when we first start meditating is thinking that we shouldn’t have any thoughts.

But your mind doesn’t have to become completely blank.

If your shopping list pops into your head during a meditation, you remember that you need to call someone, or you start thinking about everything you have to do tomorrow, it doesn’t mean you don’t know how to meditate. It simply means you need more practice.

There Isn’t Just One Way to Meditate

There are many different ways to meditate, and they won’t all work in the same way for everyone.

  • Guided meditation: someone guides you with their voice throughout the entire meditation.
  • Semi-guided meditation: you begin with a specific direction and then allow the experience to flow.
  • Free-flow meditation: you close your eyes and allow your soul, your intuition and your spiritual connection to guide you.
  • Silent meditation: you sit in silence and allow your mind to become calm.
  • Meditation with intention: you enter the meditation with a specific intention, such as healing, connecting with the spirits or receiving guidance.

For example, you can enter a meditation with the intention of connecting with the spirits or receiving guidance, without knowing exactly what is going to happen.

Let Meditation Adapt to You

There will be days when a guided meditation is exactly what you need.

Other days, you will need silence.

And there will be days when you simply close your eyes and allow your soul to take you wherever it needs to take you.

You don’t always need to do the same meditation.

Learn different ways of meditating, and then listen to what you need that day.

A Simple Way to Start a Meditation

There are four very simple steps:

Relax. Imagine. Visualise. Flow.

First, relax. Find somewhere where you won’t be disturbed, put your phone on silent and allow your body to relax.

Then, imagine. You can imagine that you are walking along a beach, through a forest, in a garden or anywhere that makes you feel good.

Next, visualise.

And this is where you can start using all of your senses. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you feel?

The more details you add, the more real the experience can feel.

And finally, flow.

At first, you are creating the experience, but there comes a point when you stop trying to control everything and allow the meditation to unfold.

You may find that places appear that you weren’t imagining, people, messages, the spirits or experiences you weren’t expecting.

Don’t try to force it. Let it flow.

You Don’t Need an Hour a Day

Many people believe that they need thirty minutes or even an hour to meditate.

If you have that time and you want to do it, perfect.

But for most of us, five or ten minutes a day is much easier to maintain.

And consistency is much more important than trying to have a perfect one-hour meditation and then not meditating again for a week.

Five or ten minutes is enough. Five or ten minutes to disconnect from the noise.

Five or ten minutes to reconnect with yourself.

That alone can become a very important part of your day.

And Remember: Not Every Meditation Will Be Amazing

There will be days when your meditation leaves you thinking, Wow What just happened?

And there will be other days when you simply relax for ten minutes.

You don’t need to have an extraordinary experience every time you close your eyes.

Sometimes your soul simply needs to rest.

But when you start practising consistently, you may begin to notice changes not only during your meditations, but also in your everyday life.

You may feel calmer, react differently to situations that used to stress you out and feel more connected to yourself, the spirits, your spiritual team and the universe.

And perhaps, little by little, you will begin to remember something that is very important to me:

You are made of spirit.

And sometimes we simply need to stop for a few minutes to remember it.
